This is the twelfth and final installment in our blog series 12 Mistakes I Made When Starting in Dentistry. In these posts, Dr. Agatha Bis shares a mistake she made and the lessons that she learned from it that helped grow and improve her practice.
Mistake #12 – Giving In (Doing What Others Want, Not What I Want)
Have you ever done this? Sure you have! We all have. We have all given in. We have all abandoned what we believed for the “easier” or “simpler” or just more “group accepted” way of doing things.
This is how they did it in my previous office!
Yes, they did it differently.
Patients won’t accept this!
Not if you believe they won’t!
You could never do it like this!
Are you not sick and tired of being told that you are wrong? That what you believe should be, is not right? That others won’t accept what you believe or it can’t be done?
History has proven time and time again that it’s the ones who believe they can change the world actually do. I have always believed that things should be different, that people should respect and value what I do, that what I do is amazing and incredible and it works! But when you get so many people telling you that it can’t be done like that, or that that’s not how it worked in the other office and so it wouldn’t work here…. Well, you simply, after some time, give in.
Stop giving in!
When You Do, It’s Over
Every time I gave in, I lost a piece of myself and, in reality, things didn’t turn out the way all those people said they would. So not only did I give in but I also did what they said would work and… it didn’t! Time after time, I took in other people’s garbage and tried to chew it and swallow it and it never worked for me. That’s not the practice I wanted to be. That’s not what I wanted to be known for. And one day, I had enough. Someone in my office said to me:
You can’t do that! Patients won’t ever do what you say!
No??? Why the f$@k not???
They just won’t. They didn’t in any other office I’ve ever worked in and I’ve been in dentistry for over 35 years!
Maybe you’ve been in it too long…
Maybe you don’t get people today…
Maybe you have too much baggage…
Y O U A R E S I M P L Y W R O N G!
The day I stopped giving in to others and started listening to my own intuition, my own vision, and my own gut, that’s when everything changed. You know what you want, who you are, and where you want to go. Don’t you dare let anyone else tell you that you can’t do it!
